Direct Air, based in Coventry, are the leading supplier of air compressors to industry since 1993. The family owned business provides energy efficient and cost-effective solutions to clients all over the UK.
S Jones Containers designed and fabricated two bespoke container units to safely house compressors and associated equipment.
The Customer
With a reputation for providing technical expertise, high quality products, and first-class customer service, Direct Air fulfil the needs of UK companies with compressed air requirements.
Their services range from the maintenance of compressed air plant to the supply and installation of a complete system – all of which are carried out by a team of fully skilled engineers, followed by thorough aftercare support from their service and sales teams.
The company’s success is owed to its strong foundation of knowledgeable staff, quality products and dedication to customer service.
The Challenge
Direct Air needed a bespoke solution to house compressed air equipment.
The enclosure would enable their team to assemble compressors and associated air treatment plant offsite and then deliver the packages to a customer’s desired location. The ability to assemble the equipment offsite and transport it to the customer meant that Direct Air could provide a complete turnkey solution that would meet onsite compressed air requirements with minimum disruption on site.
The converted container design also had to be transportable with the ability to move to other construction sites.
Having worked with S Jones before, Direct Air approached the conversions team for a bespoke container design that was both functional and addressed the challenges with sizing for that particular project.
The Solution
The initial brief from Direct Air specified a converted container design that featured side doors, and adequate ventilation and service openings. These containers would then be installed by Direct Air complete with three 75kw air compressors and air treatment equipment.
S Jones worked on the specification using detailed CAD drawings to create two bespoke high cube shipping container conversions.
One challenge was to create a design that included adequate ventilation and service openings, whilst also maintaining sufficient structural integrity of both converted units.
The 40ft container was modified with custom louvre vents, service openings, and also featured three large side doors and personnel door for accessibility into the unit. The interior of the units was lined with OSB3 Sterling board and reinforced to maintain sufficient structural integrity due to the additional side doors.
The second unit, a 20ft container, was specified for use as a control room and air treatment equipment room. This unit was also lined with OSB3 Sterling board and had a personnel door installed for easy access.
For safety and risk mitigation, the 40ft container with extensive external modifications was SWL tested to verify the design and provide ongoing load lifting compliance in accordance with LOLER 98.
