The Customer
Du Boulay Contracts, a leading main contractor in the commercial fit out and refurbishment sector of the construction industry, commissioned our conversions team to help design and modify a number of containers for Wahaca’s temporary restaurant: “The Southbank Project”.
Wahaca is a chain of restaurants based in London which boast innovative structure, quirky décor and exotic menus focusing on Mexican street food.
The Challenge
Wahaca wanted a “pop-up” restaurant structure that could progress quickly from concept to completion in time for the Golden Jubilee and 2012 London Olympics.
As a result, Wahaca’s agents approached us to support them with the technical design of the containers and resulting modifications.
The S Jones Solution
Building on decades of experience with shipping containers, our conversion team was able to flawlessly realise the architect’s vision, which saw 8 containers fit together on 2 storeys to provide dining space for 130 people.
Once modified, the containers were positioned and connected to create a series of interlinked open spaces. Complete with panoramic views, the restaurant allows breathtaking views of the Thames from an elevated position on the Southbank.
The versatility of Shipping Containers
Shipping containers are the ideal building blocks for smart structures of practically every variety. They are portable, durable and stackable. They can be used to form exterior walls and integrated into other types of building materials. With restricted budgets and timeframes many commercial and retail organisations are turning to the relatively simple, low cost and fast turnaround capability offered by modified shipping containers.
